Today, I want to share with you the fascinating legend of how the black belt came to be.
It is a tale that has been passed down through the ages, and though its legitimacy may be questionable, the moral of this tale is for certain: the black belt is a symbol of immense respect earned through years of dedication, perseverance, and an unyielding spirit.
From White to Black: The Legend of the Martial Arts Belt System
According to the legend, the martial arts belt system began with a simple white belt.
As a practitioner trained, the belt would inevitably become soiled with dirt, grass stains, sweat, and even blood. With each passing day, the belt would gradually darken, transforming from pure white to yellow, green, brown, and eventually black. It was said that the belt grew darker as the practitioner grew more experienced, their skill and knowledge deepening with each passing day.
Tradition dictated that one should never wash their belt, for fear that the “experience” earned through countless hours of training would be washed away. To this day, many martial arts academies uphold this tradition, though some do so for the more practical reason that earned merit stripes or tips may come off in the wash.
